iHealthScreen receives US patent for AI-based glaucoma detection model

Key Takeaways

  • iHealthScreen has been awarded a U.S. patent for its glaucoma detection system, which can provide a fully automated glaucoma detection report in less than 60 seconds with 94.3% accuracy.
  • The platform may be used in both optometrist offices and in primary care settings for glaucoma screening

The artificial intelligence (AI)-based software startup company iHealthScreen has been awarded a U.S. patent for its iPredict glaucoma detection system, the company announced in a press release. The platform uses high-resolution images of the eye and retina taken via a color fundus camera, which takes color pictures of the interior surface of the eye, and provides a fully automated glaucoma detection report in less than 60 seconds with 94.3% accuracy, the release stated. Results will indicate whether a patient needs to be referred to a glaucoma specialist.

iHealthScreen founder and CEO Alauddin Bhuiyan, PhD, told Healio that optometrists will be able to “use this for everyone who walks in to your practice as initial screening.” The system also can be implemented in primary care settings for early glaucoma detection.
