Description: Join us for our next community excursion as we explore the rich textures and vibrant sounds of Neary Lagoon Wildlife Sanctuary. Tucked away in the heart of Santa Cruz at the corner of California and Bay Streets, this hidden gem offers one of the most immersive sensory experiences in the region.
The Route and Experience
Our 1 mile walk begins at the California Street entrance, where the bustle of the city quickly fades into the rustle of tules and the rhythmic calls of red-winged blackbirds. The path features paved sidewalks and wooden boardwalks portions of which float and will take us directly over the water, providing a unique acoustic experience as footsteps echo softly over the lagoon.
As we traverse the marshy lagoon, keep your ears tuned for the “glug-glug” of the American Bittern or the sudden splash of a Western Pond Turtle sliding off a log. The air here is often cool and carries the fresh, earthy scent of freshwater vegetation and damp earth.
Terrain: Level boardwalks and paved paths with minimal elevation changes. Sturdy railings line the boardwalk sections, providing a consistent tactile boundary throughout the floating segments. The floating portions of the boardwalk do rock from side to side.
Sensory Highlights
The Boardwalk: Feel the gentle vibration and distinct sound of the wooden planks beneath you.
The Tules: Listen to the dry, paper-like rustle of the tall reeds swaying in the coastal breeze.
Avian Orchestra: Neary Lagoon is a premier birding spot; expect a dense layer of birdsong, from the high-pitched chirps of swallows to the deep croaks of herons.
We look forward to sharing this peaceful landscape with you. Whether you are coming for the fresh air, the wildlife, or the great company, the lagoon offers a beautiful escape for all.
