Vista Center at 3200 Hillview Avenue, Palo Alto
The building at 2470 El Camino Real that we have occupied for the past 20 years is going to be demolished, along with others on the same block, to make room for a new below-market-rate housing project. Stanford University, who owns the land, is committed to building the 70 unit project.
The good news is that Stanford has included Vista Center in its plans for the new project and we will return to the same location in two or so years as the ground floor tenant. We are thrilled about this because it means our clients, volunteers and staff will have the same easy access to public transportation and paratransit services we have enjoyed for so long.
On September 12, 2014 we moved to our interim location a mile away at 3200 Hillview Avenue, Palo Alto, where we will remain until the new building at 2500 El Camino Real is completed. This location at the intersection of Hillview Avenue and Porter Drive is near Foothill Expressway and is a 5-minute drive from our longtime home.
Vista Center staff have been orienting clients to the new interim location. We have had group outings to travel there from the California Avenue/El Camino Real intersection via Stanford’s free Marguerite Shuttle service (R line beginning 10/6), a 5 minute trip to the new building.
Outreach and Redi-Wheels will continue their services to the interim location.
Our space at 3200 Hillview Avenue is fresh and new, all on the first floor, and the building will have new restrooms and a pleasant waiting area inside the front door. The waiting area has ample seating and is close to the parking lot for picking up and dropping off.
Our interim location offers the same services as our current location, including the Low Vision Clinic, The Store, space for support groups and other services that our clients depend upon.
There’s also been a similar change afoot “over the hill.” The building housing the Ray Westman Branch of Vista Center in Santa Cruz has become more difficult for clients to access in recent years. As a result, the building is for sale and a new location sought. Office and clinic operations will be relocated to a venue that is more appropriate for clients and centrally located for greater accessibility.
